Bhai Gopal Singh

Bhai Gopal Singh Ji was a talented musician and Hazuri Ragi at Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar. He lost his eyesight at a young age, but that didn't stop him from pursuing his love for Kirtan. He was invited to Delhi and became the regular Kirtan performer at Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib in Chandani Chowk. Later, he was transferred to Mata Sundri Gurdwara, which had government servant living quarters. As a result of his desire to perform freelance Kirtan outside Gurudwaras, he faced some conflicts with the management of the Delhi Gurdwaras, which led to his job loss and eviction. Nevertheless, during this challenging period, the Sikhs who learned Gurbani Kirtan from him generously offered their support. They provided him with accommodation and meals in various homes. After his stay in Delhi, Bhai Gopal Singh Ji moved back to Amritsar, where he passed away after a cardiac arrest. He left behind a legacy of beautiful Kirtan that he had recorded on a disc of Shabads under the music and arrangements of K.S. Narula. Narula was a famous music director of Punjabi popular and folk music in the 50s and 60s, and the disc was published under HMV (later SaReGaMa records) and became very popular. Bhai Gopal Singh Ji's Kirtan is known for its classical style and soulful renditions of Gurbani Shabads. His recordings continue to inspire and touch the hearts of listeners all around the world.
