Gurbaksh Singh Matharu
Gurbaksh Matharu is an eminent Indian Classical musician acclaimed for playing the Tarshenai, Esraj and Dilruba. Matharu is also a vocal exponent of the traditional Gurbani Sangeet Parampara. His virtuosic playing seamlessly intertwines the Sarod and Vocal repertoire he was diligently taught by his Gurus. Whilst integrating many Sarod style techniques, he has developed his own unique dynamic style of playing the Tarshenai and singing. He has contributed immensely towards popularising the Tarshenai in the west and is widely praised for his soul stirring performances. More recently, he has lent his music to different genres of music and is working on several contemporary music projects. Matharu gave his first solo recital at the age of 11 in 1992. In 2001, he was invited by Ustad Zakir Hussain to open the first memorial concert for Ustad Allah Rakha Khan in England. He has performed and recorded with artists such as Talvin Singh, Hans Raj Hans, Sukhvinder Singh Namdhari and Sanju Sahai to name a few.
